Hey Parents, Tail A Tiger @ Worley on Dec 7-9th

Parents, legal guardians and grandparents are encouraged to visit our campus and "tail" their student for the day. The pair will report to classes, participate in class activities, go to lunch, go to lockers and PE/Athletics!

Due to the number of students we have this year, we are dividing our visitors into groups over three days. Here's the schedule for the three days of parent visits:

Wednesday, Dec 7th -Parents of 7th grade A through Lohse are invited to visit for the day.

Thursday, Dec 8th - Parents of 7th grade Lomas through Z are invited to visit for the day.

Friday, Dec 9th -Parents of all 8th grade students

Parents must pre-register for Tail A Tiger. Pre-registration will take place from Nov 14th - Dec 2nd. A letter describing Tail A Tiger and a pre-registration form will be sent home with each student on Monday, Nov 14th. Additionally, both the letter and the form will be made available on the campus website. Please contact the Student Services Office with any questions about this event.

Also on Friday, Dec 9th, we are hosting a Principal and Counselor Coffee for parents to discuss the new STAAR and EOC Tests. The coffee will be held in the library from 8:00 to 8:30 am.

Hope to see you at Tail A Tiger!

What are Cornell Notes? What should my child's notes look like when they come home?

What a year!

So much change has occurred since last school year. We have a new daily schedule at both our intermediate and middle school campuses. Our daily classes no longer meet for 90 minutes every other day. Instead, our classes meet daily for 45 minutes. We have new standardized testing in the state of Texas called the STAAR test. We are learning more and more about this new testing each week. What we do know is that the STAAR test will be more rigorous than TAKS. Students will be required to think more critically to answer test questions. Also, the test is timed. Students will only be given 4 hours to complete each test. In the past with TAAS and TAKS, students have been allowed to "take their time" and not rush to complete a test.

At Worley, our teachers have been working feverishly to adjust to the new daily schedule and testing expectations. Teachers have begun to give timed quizzes to acclimate students to the new testing environment. The rigor has been "ramped up" in all of our core classes - math, science, history and language arts. Students are required to work harder in these classes to better prepare them for college and the new STAAR exams.

Worley Middle School has an outstanding program called AVID or Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID students are exposed to a wide variety of college preparatory experiences and strategies including the Cornell Note Taking System and the AVID BINDER.

The Cornell Note Taking System is a method for mastering information, not just recording facts (AVID 2011 Summer Conference, Dallas). The system is efficient and utilized at Worley school wide. The purpose for taking notes this way is to stimulate critical thinking, help students remember what is said in class, and aid students in organizing information. To learn more about how Cornell Notes are used and the history of Cornell Notes, click on the following link: https://docs.google.com/present/edit?id=0Ae4MjL6R4NdTZGNrbTkzd3RfMTVkcGhnYzRndA

The AVID BINDER is another college prep strategy that has been taken school wide at Worley. The BINDER is organized neatly with a pencil/pen pouch, dividers and a daily planner/calendar. Students are required to write down their daily assignments in the planner in addition to keeping all Cornell Notes and graded papers inside the BINDER. The purpose of the BINDER is to teach all our students to be responsible, organized learners. In order for our school to make all students college ready, we must start by giving them the tools that we know they will need to succeed in college and in life - critical thinking skills, communication skills, responsibility and organization.

Inside your student's BINDER, you should find evidence of Cornell Note Taking. Please take a moment to scan through your student's BINDER as often as possible. Here are a few examples (in Google Documents) of some 7th grade Cornell Notes students have taken or will take this week:

It is the student's responsibility to have these notes recorded inside their BINDER for each class. Please help us by asking to see your student's notes each week. Students should be reviewing their notes and using them to complete assignments.

Parents are welcomed to visit our classrooms during the school day to see how our teachers provide Cornell Notes to our students. It is very important for students to know that we are all on the same page.

Parent Conference Day 2011

Worley teachers started Fall Parent Conferences on Monday, September 26th. The conferences will last 15-30 minutes per parent. Conferences can be held before school, after school or during the teacher's conference period. Teachers may also hold conferences via telephone if that method is more convenient for parents.

Our goal is to communicate with every parent of students who are currently struggling to be successful.

Whether your student is struggling or not, you may contact your child's teacher to arrange a conference any time between Sept 26th and Oct 14th.

Teachers will be on campus all day on October 10th for scheduled conferences with parents. Please make sure to contact your child's teachers to arrange for a conference time.

Happy Conferencing!

STAAR Information for Parents, September 2011

Dear Parents,

The State of Texas is eliminating the TAKS test and replacing it with a test called STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness). The new test for middle school students will test the same grades and the same subjects as the TAKS test, grade 7 – reading, math, and writing and grade 8 – reading, math, science, and social studies. Plus, if your child is taking a course for high school credit, she or he will take the STAAR end-of-course exam in that subject.

As of right now, the new STAAR test will also have the following changes:

  • There will be a 4-hour time limit for your student to complete the STAAR test. However, if your student receives special accommodations because of unique learning needs or circumstances, extended time may be available.
  • The STAAR test will be longer in most grades and subjects and will be a harder test.
  • STAAR Modified tests and STAAR Alternate tests will be available, just as they were with TAKS.
  • The grade 7 writing test will take two days to complete
  • Once your child starts taking courses for high school credit, he or she will have to pass the STAAR end-of-course exams in English I, II, and III; Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, World Geography, World History, and U.S. History; Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • The end-of-course exams will count as 15% of your student’s grade in the course.

The middle school STAAR tests will be given on the following dates:

March 27 – 7th grade writing (day 1); 8th grade math
March 28 – 7th grade writing (day 2); 8th grade reading
April 24 – 7th grade math
April 25 – 7th grade reading
April 26 – 8th grade science
April 27 – 8th grade social studies

We look forward to working with you to help your child succeed. As we receive more information from the Texas Education Agency, we will pass it on to you.
